Joy Kim Lieberthal, MSW, has been selected by the current Board
of Directors to serve as the new President. Replacing Mea Nelson
who has successfully served as the President of Also-Known-As
since September 1999 who resigned this past fall due to personal
reasons.
As
a social worker and Korean adoptee, Joy has been active with our
organization for over two-in-a-half years. She has been instrumental
in establishing our highly successful Mentorship Program for adoptive
youth with Tom Kaplan and while her presidency will demand new challenges,
she will continue to remain active with that program.
In addition to her role as President, Joy will be Co-Directing
the Speakers Bureau program with Peter Savasta. She is pleased to
be appointed to her new position and looks forward to advancing
Also-Known-As and its wonderful programs. We are grateful that Joy
has agreed to step up to this challenge and wish her the best of
luck.
New Washington DC Chapter
Also-Known-As
is pleased to announce the installation of its first Chapter in
Washington D.C. This new chapter will service the greater Baltimore/Washington
D.C. Area. The DC chapter is excited about being an integral part
of the international adoption community and is committed to supporting,
educating and contributing to the community. This is an exciting
time for our organization!
After a long consideration, we've chosen to change the membership
structure. In order to ease our administration resources all memberships
will now expire at the end of each year. We will still provide the
same services such as a one year subscription to TransCultured Magazine,
event bulletins and program discounts. In addition, with the establishment
of chapter organizations we've divided the membership into two classes
General Members and Chapter Members.
For Current Members
If you became a member after November 2000, your membership fee
will be applied to your 2001 membership. All other memberships were
terminated on December 31st, 2000. If you became a member prior
to November you will have to renew your membership
for the coming year.
D.C. Chapter Members
If you reside in the States of MD, VA, WV and Washington D.C. your
membership has been transferred to the Also-Known-As - Washington
D.C. Chapter. Chapter members do not have voting rights within the
Also-Known-As Parent Organization (NYC) but do hold voting rights
with their local chapter. See the for more information.
