Culture Day 2001: Rice Around the World" continues the tradition begun by the adoptive parent organization Gathering International Families Together (GIFT) over ten years ago and on the success of last year's Korean Culture Day in which 400 international adoptive families were exposed to a day filled with fun cultural activities and entertainment.

This year in keeping in line with Also-Known-As' commitment to the entire intercountry adoption community, we are expanding Korean Culture Day to include other cultures. Hence the theme for Culture Day 2001 is "Rice Around the World" in attempt to show how common themes, such as rice, are common to all cultures and yet treated differently. In this way we hope to demonstrate that despite cultural differences there are similarities within all cultures that bond us all together as one human family.

More Culture Day | Volunteer

Following the success of the First International Gathering of Korean Adoptees, the Second Gathering will take place August 9-12, 2001 in Oslo, Norway. Open to Korean Adoptees born before 1983 and their spouses, the Second Gathering will be an opportunity for adoptees gather and share experiences.

Spearheaded by Adopted Korean's Association (FKA, Norway), The Korea Club (Korea Klubben, Denmark), Association of Korean Adoptees (AKF, Sweden) and Children of the World (Norway), this event will also be co-sponsored by Holt International and Also-Known-As.

Also-Known-As will be coordinating American adoptee support for this major international event.

The spirit of continuing the "mini-gathering" in Los Angeles is to follow the same mantra of gathering together without associations, social workers, and psychology speaking sessions and charging registration fees to be at the event.

This dual hosted event with AKASoCal will give everyone a chance to mingle and meet other KADs who want to discuss their adoption issues that many of us have already explored.
